REORGANISED
The
Waikato Branch of the Post Polio Support Society NZ (Inc) has
elected
a new committee after many years of functioning informally. You can
see and read about some of the past meetings on this web site. It is
important that as Polio survivors age, we are able to receive
support both from our peer group and from medical services which are
becoming harder and harder to access. The reason for formalizing the
Hamilton group is to better represent the needs of our members to those
medical services and providers.

committee
Back Row: Noel Morris, Jack Norton, John Forbes (President), Helen Cook
Front Row Jean Cotter (Vice President), Alan McAllen, Laura Ladkin
Our new president John
Forbes
is one of the younger members of the group. As he has been confronting
the effects of Post Polio Syndrome in his own life, he has become
increasingly involved in the Society, and also serves on the National Board of Management.
Our guest speaker
at the July 24th meeting was Margaret Holroyd who gave us a
thought-provoking talk THE JOYS & CHALLENGES OF AGEING.
Margaret has lived with a disability and has learnt some of the secrets
of how to age with enthusiasm. She left us with lots of ideas and
challenges.
Because
the PPSS National Annual Meeting will be held as a Mini Conference in
Hamilton in September (see
separate notice)
there will not be another Support Group meeting in Hamilton until
November or December. Normally there are four meetings annually, where
those who are experiencing Post Polio symptoms and their familes and
carers get together and share stories, ideas, information and
encouragement with one another.
