SUPPORT GROUP MEETING
ACCESSIBILITY SPECIAL
SPEAKER: GERRI POMEROY
Gerri is a Disability
Advocate at CCS Disability Action where she represents those who have
problems
with access. She talks to the City Council, the Regional Council and
others about steps, curb cuts, busses and many more scenarios. She
chairs the Access for All meetings where people with various
disabilities can bring their specific access issues.
Gerri shared some of her own story of having a rare form of cancer in
her 20s, and treatment that has left her over the years with
debilitating problems. This has not stopped her from being a cheerful
and passionate advocate for those with access challenges. She had us
enthralled with stories of her involvement with Councils and committees
where her position from a wheelchair emphasised her point and brought
about change.
AGM: Our Waikato
Board (with the exception of Laura Ladkin), was re-elected. President -
John Forbes, Vice President - Jean Cotter, Sec / Treasurer - Noel
Morris, Alan McAllen, Helen Cook, and Jack Norton.
Waikato Mini Newsletter for June 2012
- At our March meeting the weather was kind to us and we enjoyed
eating ice-cream in our back yard. Margaret Southgate gave us a talk
about Patient Advocacy, which raise a variety of interesting points for
us all to talk about. As a result Edith and Noel attended a DHB
Community Forum, and hope that this will be another way of keeping up
with the way our needs are met by DHB services.
- National Conference will be
in Wellington 27 ~ 29 September. Guest speaker will be Jega, a
Physiotherapist from Perth. Well worth the effort of coming to
Conference, so start saving. More details in your next Polio News or here.
- Several
of our Waikato members are among those who have received grants from
the Duncan Trust Fund. New applications are still being received. Is
there something that you need that isn’t funded? (Not a wish-list)
- And several of our members have applied to go to QE
Health
recently. Waikato polios are eligible for DHB funding, and your GP can
make an referral for you on line. The next intake of first-time polios
will be in September.
